Occupational English Test (OET) Preparation for Nurses
Prepare for the Occupational English Test (OET) with healthcare-focused English training designed specifically for nurses and healthcare professionals.
The Occupational English Test (OET) is an English-language test designed for healthcare professionals. It assesses your ability to communicate effectively in real-world healthcare situations across four skills:
Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking
OET is available for a range of healthcare professions, including Nursing, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Radiography and others.
👩⚕️ OET for Nurses
OET Nursing is designed around healthcare communication and is relevant to nurses planning professional registration, employment or further opportunities in English-speaking healthcare systems.
Depending on the regulator and your individual pathway, OET may be accepted for nursing registration or other professional purposes in countries such as:
🇦🇺 Australia
🇬🇧 United Kingdom
🇳🇿 New Zealand
🇮🇪 Ireland
🇨🇦 Canada
However, OET acceptance and score requirements are not the same in every country or for every nursing regulator.
Therefore, nursing students and internationally educated nurses should always check the latest requirements of the relevant regulatory authority before booking an OET test.
🇦🇺 OET for Nursing Registration in Australia
For nurses planning registration in Australia, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) has specific English-language requirements.
Importantly, Australia updated the minimum English-test scores from 23 April 2026.
For OET tests taken on or after 23 April 2026, the current NMBA/Ahpra requirements for the test pathway are:
| OET Component | Minimum Score |
|---|---|
| Listening | 350 |
| Reading | 360 |
| Writing | 350 |
| Speaking | 360 |
Applicants using two test sittings may be able to combine results within the applicable rules, including minimum scores that must be achieved in each sitting.
These requirements apply to applicants seeking initial registration and should be checked against the latest NMBA/Ahpra guidance at the time of application.
Important: Students preparing for Australia should not rely on older information stating that Grade B in every OET component is the current Australian requirement.
🇬🇧 OET for Nurses in the UK
For nurses applying for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), the current OET requirement is:
| OET Component | NMC Requirement |
|---|---|
| Listening | B / 350+ |
| Reading | B / 350+ |
| Writing | C+ / 300+ |
| Speaking | B / 350+ |
The NMC accepts OET on Paper, OET on Computer and OET@Home, and applicants should select the Nursing version of OET.
The NMC also allows certain applicants to combine OET results from two test sittings, subject to its specific conditions.
